The Show Must Go On: Geoje

‘여행하는 예술가의 포트폴리오‘를 콘셉트로 시공간의 제약을 넘어 지속되어 온 TSMGO(The Show Must Go On) 프로젝트가 경상남도 거제시의 복합문화공간 아그네스 파크에서 새로운 전시를 선보인다. 2011년부터 이어져 온 TSMGO는 토탈미술관이 기획한 이동형 전시 프로젝트로, “쇼는 계속되어야 한다”라는 슬로건 아래 팬데믹과 같은 사회적 제약과 시공간의 한계를 넘어 예술적 실천을 지속해 왔다.

TSMGO 프로젝트는 작가에게 ‘포트폴리오 여행 가방‘을 의뢰하는 것에서 출발한다. 이 여행 가방은 작가의 세계관을 응축한 작은 전시장으로, 도록이나 포트폴리오보다 입체적이고 대형 작품보다 유연하다. 이는 마르셀 뒤샹의 <La Boîte-en-valise 여행용 가방>에서 착안한 것으로, TSMGO는 이를 오늘날의 맥락 속에서 재해석하고 확장한다. 여행 가방을 매개로 한 전시는 보편적으로 전시장이 갖추어야 할 물리적 조건에서 비교적 자유로우며, 어디서든 열릴 수 있는 새로운 전시 형식을 제안한다. 참여 작가는 작품, 전시, 포트폴리오, 작가 노트 등을 집약하거나, 작품 세계관의 주요 장면을 발췌해 가방을 제작한다. 이렇게 완성된 가방은 이동하며 관객과 만나는 새로운 전시 형식이 되며, 화이트 큐브에 한정되지 않고 협소한 공간, 도서산간 지역, 제한된 예산 속에서도 전시가 가능하도록 설계되었다.

TSMGO 프로젝트는 올해 6월 캐나다 오타와에서 돌아와, 10월의 가을 동안 강원도 양양군의 힐러스에서 머무르다, 이어지는 겨울부터 따뜻한 남쪽 도시인 경상남도 거제시에서 한 해의 마지막을 보낸다. 전시가 열리는 거제도의 아그네스 파크는 생활 바다이자, 여행객이 찾는 견내량 바닷가에 자리한 복합문화공간으로, 전시장, 다목적실, 공연장, 생태 정원 등 다양한 실내외 공간을 갖추고 있는 곳이다. 또한 아그네스 파크는 옛 수산물 가공 공장을 리노베이션한 공간으로 독특한 구조를 가지고 있다. 거제도의 경관과 다채로운 공간, 그리고 현대미술이 유기적인 관계를 맺으며 펼쳐지는 전시를 통해 관객이 삶 가까이에서 예술을 경험하는 계기를 마련하고자 한다.

Under the concept of a “Traveling Artist’s Portfolio,” the TSMGO (The Show Must Go On) project—an ongoing initiative that transcends spatial and temporal constraints—presents its latest exhibition at Agnes Park, a multi-purpose cultural complex located in Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do. Launched in 2011, TSMGO is a mobile exhibition project organized by Total Museum of Contemporary Art. Under the slogan “the show must go on,” it has sustained artistic practice despite social limitations and disruptions, including the pandemic, continuously exploring possibilities beyond conventional boundaries of time and space.

The TSMGO project begins by commissioning artists to create a “portfolio suitcase.” Functioning as a compact exhibition space that condenses the artist’s worldview, the suitcase is more three-dimensional than a printed catalogue and more flexible than large-scale works. Inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s La Boîte-en-valise, TSMGO reinterprets and expands this concept within a contemporary context. Exhibitions centered around the suitcase operate with fewer physical constraints than traditional venues and propose a format that can unfold virtually anywhere. Participating artists assemble artworks, exhibitions, portfolios, notes, or selected scenes from their practice into the suitcase. Once completed, the suitcase becomes a mobile exhibition that travels and encounters audiences, designed to be presented not only in conventional white cubes but also in compact spaces, remote regions, or settings with limited resources.

 

After returning from Ottawa, Canada in June of this year, the TSMGO project spent the autumn months at Hillus in Yangyang, Gangwon Province, and now concludes the year in the warm southern city of Geoje in Gyeongsangnam-do. Agnes Park, the exhibition venue on Geoje Island, is a cultural complex situated on the Gyeonnaeryang coast, a site both for everyday life and for travelers. The venue encompasses various indoor and outdoor spaces, including exhibition halls, multipurpose rooms, a performance venue, and an ecological garden. It is also characterized by its unique architecture, having been renovated from a former seafood processing plant. Through an exhibition that interweaves the landscape of Geoje, the diversity of the space, and contemporary art, the project aims to offer audiences an opportunity to encounter art in close proximity to everyday life.
