여행하는 예술가의 포트폴리오, 어디서든 펼쳐볼 수 있는 전시

2012년 첫발을 뗀 ‘The Show Must Go On(TSMGO)’은 하나의 질문에서 출발했다. 국제 비엔날레와 대규모 전시가 늘어나는 가운데, 우리의 만남은 그만큼 더 긴밀해졌는가. 작품이 국경을 넘나드는 빈도는 증가했지만, 정작 만남의 밀도는 옅어졌다. 작가와 기획자, 작가와 관객이 깊이 있게 교류할 기회는 상대적으로 드물었다. TSMGO는 이러한 아쉬움 속에서 작지만 유연한 대안을 모색하며 시작한 프로젝트다.

프로젝트는 참여 작가에게 ‘포트폴리오 여행 가방’을 의뢰하며 첫 단추를 끼운다. 소형 작품과 드로잉, 작가 노트, 아카이브 자료가 담긴 가방은 작가의 세계를 응축한 작은 전시가 된다. 인쇄된 도록보다 입체적이고, 큰 부피의 작품보다 가벼운 가방은 국경을 넘나들며 새로운 만남을 이끌어냈다. 해외의 기획자들은 각자의 공간에서 가방을 열어보고, 감상과 기록을 다시 한국으로 보내왔다. 이동이 제한되었던 팬데믹 시기에도 가방의 여행은 멈추지 않았다. 때로는 화이트 큐브 전시장이 아닌 사무실, 카페 테이블, 창고 한편에서 전시가 펼쳐졌다. 이처럼 “쇼는 계속되어야 한다(The Show Must Go On)”라는 프로젝트의 제목은 단순한 구호를 넘어, 유연한 이동성과 지속성을 토대로 대화와 담론을 생산하는 새로운 전시 형태로 자리 잡았다.

지난 10여 년 동안 TSMGO는 런던, 싱가포르, 코타키나발루, 베네치아, 파리, 로스앤젤레스, 바르샤바 등 국제 도시를 비롯해 양양, 거제 등 국내 여러 지역을 순회했다. 국제 교류 프로젝트로 출발했으나, 이제는 국내 곳곳으로 반경을 넓혀가는 중이다. 현대미술에 대한 심리적 문턱을 낮추고, 전문 전시 공간과 거리가 있는 지역에서는 일상의 장소로 찾아가며 ‘어디서든 펼쳐볼 수 있는 전시’로서의 여정을 이어가고 있다.

서로 다른 시기에 제작되어 각자의 궤적에 따라 여행을 다녀온 가방들의 표면에는 이동의 흔적이 남아 있다. 이번 전시는 그 긴 여정을 짚어보는 중간 기록이다. 국내외 프로젝트를 담은 아카이브 영상과 참여 작가의 100초 인터뷰를 통해 가방들이 축적해 온 만남과 교류의 시간을 돌아본다. 이를 바탕으로 가방과 함께 여행해 온 작가의 세계가 현장에서 어떤 반응을 이끌었을지 상상해 보길 바란다. 또한 가방 안의 작품을 직접 재배치해 보며 감상 이상의 긴밀한 시간을 보내고 이번 여행지에서도 새로운 맥락의 서사를 더해주길 기대한다.

해운대 해변을 마주한 오케이앤피 부산은 창밖으로 바다 풍경과 여행자들의 활기찬 움직임이 겹쳐지며, 동시에 국제 예술 교류가 활발히 이루어지는 교차로 같은 공간이다. 이곳에서 TSMGO의 여행 가방이 품은 다채로운 기록을 살펴보고 아직 만나지 못한 현대미술과의 새로운 접점을 떠올려 본다면, 그 순간이 곧 TSMGO이 이어갈 다음 여정의 기점이 될 것이다.

The Show Must Go On (TSMGO): A Traveling Artist’s Portfolio, An Exhibition That Unfolds Anywhere

The Show Must Go On (TSMGO) began in 2012 with a simple question: as international biennials and large-scale exhibitions continue to multiply, have our encounters become any more meaningful? While artworks travel across borders more frequently than ever, the depth of those encounters has often diminished. Opportunities for sustained dialogue between artists and curators, and between artists and audiences, have become increasingly rare. TSMGO emerged from this concern, seeking a modest yet flexible alternative.

The project begins by inviting participating artists to create a Portfolio Travel Case. Containing small-scale works, drawings, artist notes, and archival materials, each case functions as a compact exhibition that distills the artist’s practice. More tangible than a printed catalogue and considerably more portable than transporting large artworks, these travel cases have crossed borders to generate new encounters. Curators around the world opened the cases within their own spaces, responding with reflections and documentation that were then returned to Korea. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, when physical mobility was severely restricted, the journey of the cases continued. Exhibitions unfolded not only in white-cube galleries but also in offices, on café tables, and in storage rooms. In this way, the title The Show Must Go On has evolved beyond a simple slogan, becoming a model for a new exhibition format that emphasizes mobility, continuity, dialogue, and the production of critical discourse.

Over the past decade, TSMGO has traveled through international cities including London, Singapore, Kota Kinabalu, Venice, Paris, Los Angeles, and Warsaw, while also expanding to regional destinations across Korea such as Yangyang and Geoje. What began as an international exchange project has gradually extended its reach throughout the country. By lowering the psychological barriers often associated with contemporary art and bringing exhibitions into everyday spaces beyond conventional art venues, TSMGO continues its journey as an exhibition that can unfold anywhere.

Each travel case bears visible traces of its journey. Created at different moments and traveling along distinct trajectories, the surfaces of the cases record years of movement and exchange. This exhibition serves as an interim archive of that ongoing journey. Through archival videos documenting projects in Korea and abroad, together with 100-second interviews featuring participating artists, visitors are invited to revisit the encounters and conversations accumulated over time. We hope these materials inspire visitors to imagine how each artist’s practice has been received in different contexts throughout its travels. Visitors are also encouraged to rearrange the works contained within the travel cases themselves, transforming the experience from passive viewing into active engagement and contributing yet another layer of narrative to the project’s continuing journey.

Facing Haeundae Beach, OKNP Busan overlooks the sea while sharing the vibrant energy of travelers passing by. As a crossroads for international artistic exchange, it provides an ideal setting for TSMGO. We invite visitors to explore the diverse histories contained within these traveling cases and to discover new points of connection with contemporary art. In doing so, this moment may become the very starting point for TSMGO’s next journey.
