Korean Art Year Zero: 42 Stories spans more than 120 years, from
the migration to Hawaii in 1903 to the present day in 2026. Yet the exhibition does not arrange this period as a single chronology progressing from past to present. The migration of 1903 is not an event confined to the past. Migration and diaspora continue to unfold today. War and division, industrialization and urbanization, democratization and social movements, globalization and mobility, and technological change are likewise not issues belonging exclusively to particular historical periods. They persist in different forms within contemporary life and art.
The past and present are therefore not treated as separate in this exhibition. From Lee Do-yeong (1884–1933), who was born in the late nineteenth century and worked across traditional Korean painting and calligraphy, current-affairs cartoons, and illustration amid the upheavals of the Korean Empire and Japanese colonial rule, to Quac Insik, who worked across postwar Korea and Japan, and artists in their thirties and forties working today, works and records, historical events and individual lives from different periods encounter one another through 42 keywords, forming new relationships beyond chronological sequence.
The exhibition does not seek to present an art-historical progression from Lee Do-yeong to Quac Insik and then to contemporary artists. Instead, artists and works from different periods are brought together in the present, revealing new connections across historical boundaries depending on the keywords through which they are viewed. The year 1903 serves as an important reference point for this temporal framework, but it does not delimit the exhibition’s scope. Just as the life of Lee Do-yeong, born in 1884, brings an earlier period into the present, a single artwork or an individual life can traverse multiple historical periods.
Rather than beginning in 1903 and arriving at 2026, the exhibition looks at 1903 and 2026 together.
Korean Art Year Zero offers a renewed perspective on the temporal dimensions of Korean art.
