1526년 스페인이 페루에 도착했을 때, 키푸카마욕Quipucamayoc의 인구조사에 따르면 당시 총 인구는 12만명에 달했다. [그로부터] 겨우 45년이 지나 원주민은 1만명으로 집계되었다. 식민주의 역사상 가장 극렬했던 대량 학살 중 하나로 인구 10분의 9가 살해당한 것이다. 1564년 페루 전역에서 온 원주민 노예는 우앙카벨리카Huancavelica 수은 광산과 포토시Potosi 은광으로 보내졌고 그곳에서 300년이 넘도록 매일 평균 75명의 원주민과 아프리카 노예가 죽어갔다.

At the beginning of the year 5 clothing workers in Cambodia were shot dead by military police. There had previously been assassinations of trade union leaders in the industry and imprisonment. Safety conditions had worsened despite the cover given by the International Labour Organisation. But over the course of the previous year workers had refused to be intimidated and nearly doubled the minimum wage.

I had my own ideas at this time and a high regard for manual crafts and what came to be called applied arts. The Bellas Artes school had a very low opinion of such work, those Indigenous artefacts were merely decorative, they said. I didn’t see it that way. There was no respect and no work for applied arts here in Peru.
