《uni form: Broken Twill in Berlin》

2025년 8월 서울 토탈미술관에서 개최된 《uni form: Broken Twill》은  패션과 현대예술의 경계를 넘나들며 ‘유니폼’이라는 사회적 구조를 재해석한 전시였다.  이 전시는 패션 디자이너이자 현대미술 작가인 최철용(Chul Yong CHOI)의 회화 시리즈를 중심으로 구성되었지만, 기획자, 디자이너, 연구자, 미디어 전문가로 구성된 코어그룹(Core Group)이 함께 참여하며  개인전의 형식을 넘어서는 새로운 전시 기획 모델을 제안했다.

즉, 《uni form》은 작가 개인의 조형언어를 보여주는 자리가 아니라, ‘유니폼’이라는 개념을 사회·문화·기술적 맥락에서 심화 연구하는 협업적 플랫폼으로 작동했다.  기획 단계부터 연구, 철학/미학, 매거진,  디자인, 공간 구성, 데이터 수집까지  각 분야의 전문가들이 참여함으로써  개인전의 형식을 빌린 집단적 리서치 전시라는 새로운 가능성을 제시했다.

또한 주제의 깊이 있는 탐구를 위해  최철용의 회화 외에도 다양한 초청작품이 함께 전시되었다. 이는 한명의  작가를 중심으로 하되,  그 주제를 다각도로 확장하고 해석하는 협업적 담론 구조를 형성했다는 점에서 신선하고 실험적인 전시로 평가받았다.

이러한 특징들은 《uni form》이 단발성 개인전이 아니라,  동시대 담론을 지속적으로 확장해 나가는 플랫폼적 구조를 지니고 있음을 보여준다. ‘유니폼’이라는 주제를 통해 집단과 개인, 규율과 자유, 제도와 감정 사이의 관계를 탐구한 이 전시는, 결과적으로 예술을 통해 ‘사회적 구조를 사유하는 실험적 장(場)’을 제안했다.

이번 베를린 에디션은 이러한 서울 전시의 철학과 구조를 계승하면서,  물리적 전시의 확장을 넘어 디지털 트랜스포메이션(Digital Transformation)을 본격적으로 시도한 버전이다.  토탈미술관에서 진행되었던 전시의 전 과정—기획, 설치, 기록, 대화, 이미지, 텍스트—을 데이터셋(dataset)으로 구축, 공유하고, 이를 바탕으로 AI 창작 실험과 제너러티브 리컴포지션(generative recomposition)을 진행했다.

즉, 《uni form: Broken Twill》의 베를린 에디션은 서울 전시의 내용을 단순히 재현하는 것이 아니라, 그 과정 자체를 데이터 기반 창작의 원천으로 재구성한 실험적 전시이다.  이러한 시도는 전시를 ‘결과’가 아닌 ‘과정의 집적체이자 재생 가능한 구조’로 바라보며, 예술과 기술, 인간과 인공지능이 함께 동시대의 시각적 언어를 다시 짜는 장(場)을 만들어낸다.

무엇보다 ‘유니폼’ 프로젝트는 베를린 전시를 기점으로 다른 도시로의 확장과 다양한 예술가 및 연구자와의 협업을 가능하게 하는 국제적 순환 플랫폼(global curatorial platform)으로 발전하고 있다. 이는 전시가 단일한 결과물로 머무는 것이 아니라, AI, 데이터, 패션, 예술, 사회학적 담론이 교차하는 살아 있는 구조로서  지속적으로 진화해 나간다는 점에서 큰 의의를 지닌다.

The exhibition “uni form: Broken Twill,” (uni form) held at Total Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul in August 2025, crossed the boundaries of fashion, art, and technology to reinterpret the social structure of the ‘uniform.’ Although the exhibition was centered on the painting series of fashion designer and contemporary artist Chul Yong CHOI, it also involved a Core Group consisting of curators, designers, researchers, and media specialists, proposing a new curatorial model that transcends the typical format of a solo exhibition.

“uni form” functioned not merely as a presentation of an individual artist’s visual language but as a collaborative platform that deepened the study of the uniform concept within social, cultural, and technological contexts. Experts from various disciplines participated in every stage of the project — from research, philosophy, and design to spatial composition and data collection —
offering a new possibility of a collective research-based exhibition that borrows the form of a solo show.

To further explore the theme, the exhibition also included a number of invited works. Centered around a single artist, it constructed a multilayered structure of discourse that expanded and reinterpreted the subject from various perspectives, earning recognition for its freshness and experimental approach.

These characteristics demonstrate that “uni form” is not a one-time exhibition but a platform-like structure that continues to expand contemporary discourse. By exploring the relationship between collectivity and individuality, discipline and freedom, institution and emotion through the lens of the uniform, the exhibition proposed an experimental field for reflecting on social structures through art.

The Berlin edition inherits this philosophy and structure from the Seoul exhibition, taking a step further to pursue a full-fledged digital transformation. Every element of the Total Museum exhibition —exhibition planning, installation, documentation, conversations, images, and texts —
was transformed into a dataset and used as the foundation for AI-based creative experiments and generative recompositions.

Thus, “uni form: Broken Twill – Berlin Edition” does not merely replicate the Seoul exhibition
but reconstructs its process as a creative source rooted in data. This approach redefines the exhibition as not a finished result but as an accumulative and regenerative process, creating a space where art, technology, humans, and artificial intelligence weave together new visual languages of our time.

Above all, the “uni form” project, beginning with its Berlin presentation, is envisioned as an evolving global curatorial platform, enabling further expansion to other cities and collaborations among artists, researchers, and institutions worldwide. Rather than being confined to a single outcome, the exhibition continues to evolve as a living structure in which AI, data, fashion, art, and social discourse dynamically intersect.

This Berlin edition presents, for the first time, the results of a digital recomposition hackathon held in Yangyang, based on the dataset constructed during the Seoul exhibition. The dataset does not remain as documentation—it becomes image again, through AI.
