노순천 개인전 《먼 곳의 크기》

멀어질수록 작아지지 않는 것들이 있다.
가까이에 있는 것 또한 언제든 배경으로 물러나 하나의 풍경이 되고, 창밖의 바다와 산은 실내의 벽과 계단, 유리의 표면 위로 조용히 번져온다. 먼 곳의 크기란 물리적 거리의 문제가 아니라, 사물이 우리에게서 얼마나 물러나 있는지, 또 얼마나 깊이 스며드는지에 따라 달라지는 감각의 반응이다.

노순천의 조각은 바로 그 물러남과 스며듦의 자리에 놓인다.
선처럼 가늘고, 윤곽처럼 얇고, 종이를 오린 그림자처럼 서 있는 형상들은 아그네스 파크의 건축 사이를 조용히 건넌다. 그것들은 독립된 조각으로 서 있기도 하고, 벽에 기대고, 모퉁이를 감싸고, 선반과 보이드(Void) 곁에 머물며 주변의 빛과 공기, 그리고 바다의 거리와 함께 어디서든 하나의 장면을 이룬다.

그의 조각은 공간 속에서 불현듯 작아졌다가 다시 커지고, 가까이에 있으면서도 아득히 먼 곳의 존재처럼 물러난다. 어떤 형상은 깊숙한 건물의 벽체와 포개지고, 어떤 형상은 창밖의 산과 바다, 수평선의 한 줄과 겹쳐지며 그 경계를 흐린다.

《먼 곳의 크기》는 단지 먼 풍경의 크기를 말하는 것이 아니다.
한자리에 모인 여러 형상은 작은 조각이라기보다 멀리 보이는 존재들의 군집처럼 다가오고, 창가에 놓인 작품은 실내의 벽과 바깥의 풍경을 한순간에 같은 장면 안으로 끌어들인다. 조각은 그 자리에 서 있으면서도 끊임없이 멀어지고, 풍경은 배경에 머물지 않고 형상 안으로 스며든다. 그 사이에서 조용히 흔들리는 거리의 감각, 보이는 것과 느껴지는 것의 크기가 서로 어긋나는 순간을 오래 바라보게 한다.

There are things that do not diminish in scale simply because they are far away.

Likewise, what is close at hand can quietly recede into the background to become part of the landscape, while the sea and mountains beyond the window gently extend across the interior—settling onto walls, staircases, and glass surfaces. The perceived scale of distant things is not determined by physical distance alone, but by the extent to which they withdraw from us or permeate our awareness.

No Sooncheon’s sculptures occupy precisely this threshold between withdrawal and presence.

Delicate as lines, thin as contours, and standing like silhouettes cut from paper, the figures move quietly through the architecture of Agnes Park. At times they stand independently as sculptures; at others they lean against walls, embrace corners, or rest beside shelves and voids. In every setting, they form subtle relationships with the surrounding light, air, and the distant sea, becoming integral to the space they inhabit.

Within the exhibition, the sculptures seem to contract and expand with each shift in perspective. Though physically near, they often recede as if belonging to a place far beyond immediate reach. Some merge visually with the building’s interior walls, while others align with the mountains, the sea, and the horizon beyond the windows, dissolving the boundaries between sculpture, architecture, and landscape.

The Measure of a Distant Place is not simply about the size of a distant landscape.

Gathered together, the figures appear less as individual sculptures than as a constellation of presences seen from afar. Works placed by the windows draw the interior and the landscape outside into a single visual field. The sculptures remain where they are, yet continually seem to drift farther away, while the landscape no longer serves merely as a backdrop but gradually enters into the forms themselves. Between the two emerges a quiet shift in perception—one in which what is seen and what is felt no longer correspond in scale.
