우종택 개인전 《무시광겁(無始曠劫)의 묘유(妙有)》
《무시광겁(無始曠劫)의 묘유(妙有)》는 시작도 끝도 없는 시간 속에서, 실체가 없으면서도 분명히 존재하는 무엇을 향한다. ‘무시광겁(無始曠劫)’이 인간의 감각으로는 헤아릴 수 없는 우주적 시간을 가리킨다면, ‘묘유(妙有)’는 비어 있는 듯하나 사라지지 않고 남아 있는 생명의 기운을 뜻한다. 우종택의 작업은 이 보이지 않는 시간과 존재를 회화와 설치, 물질과 공간, 그리고 관람자의 감각을 통해 드러낸다. 또한 우종택의 작업이 말하는 묘유, 곧 실체가 없으면서도 분명히 존재하는 무엇은 이곳에서 위기와 회복, 사라짐과 되돌아옴, 물질과 정신이 서로를 비추는 감각으로 확장된다.
그러한 감각은 아그네스 파크에서 《무시광겁(無始曠劫)의 묘유(妙有)》는 나무로 돌아온다. 이곳의 현목은 흰 전시실의 여백, 바다와 맞닿은 장소, 옛 공장의 기억, 컬렉션의 시간 사이에 낮게 놓인다. 나무는 공간을 가르기보다 장소의 기억들을 천천히 잇는다. 시작도 끝도 없는 시간 속에서, 실체가 없으나 분명히 존재하는 묘유의 세계가 아그네스 파크에서 다시 모습을 드러낸다.
검게 물든 나무, 현목(玄木)과 회화 작업을 중심으로 우종택 작가가 오랫동안 탐구해 온 기(氣), 자연, 몸의 사유를 아그네스 파크의 공간 안에서 새롭게 펼쳐 보이는 이번 전시는 그 사유를 거제의 바다와 장소의 기억 속에서 다시 펼친다. 회화들은 벽면을 따라 차분한 리듬을 만들고, 낮게 놓인 현목은 회화와 공간 사이를 잇는 침묵의 축으로 자리한다. 화면 안의 검은 획들은 번지고, 부딪히고, 흩어지며, 바닥의 현목은 그 획들이 잠시 물질의 몸을 얻은 듯한 상태로 머문다. 기운은 전시장 밖으로 뻗어 나가 견내량의 바다와 이어진다.
거제와 통영 사이의 물길이 만나는 이 바다는 한산대첩의 역사와도 맞닿아 있으며, 오늘의 고요한 수면 아래 오래된 사건과 기억의 시간을 품고 있다. 검게 물든 현목이 한때 살아 있었던 나무의 시간과 베어짐의 흔적을 품고 있듯, 이곳의 바다 역시 사라진 사건과 남겨진 기억을 간직한다. 나무의 검은 표면과 바다의 깊은 물결은 서로 다른 물질이지만, 둘 다 침묵 속에 보이지 않는 시간을 품고 있다는 점에서 만난다.

《Wondrous Existence Through Beginningless Eternity》turns toward something that exists unmistakably even without possessing a tangible substance, within a time without beginning or end. Beginningless Eternity (無始曠劫) evokes a cosmic expanse of time immeasurable to human perception, while Wondrous Presence (妙有) refers to a vital presence that, though seemingly empty, does not vanish but endures. Woo Jong-taek’s practice brings this invisible time and existence into view through painting and installation, material and space, and the sensory experience of the viewer. The Wondrous Presence articulated in his work—that which has no tangible substance yet nevertheless exists—expands here into a sensibility where crisis and recovery, disappearance and return, matter and spirit mirror one another.
At Agnes Park, this sensibility returns to the tree. In 《Wondrous Existence Through Beginningless Eternity》, the hyeonmok (玄木, blackened wood) lies low within the spaciousness of the white gallery, between the sea and the site, the memory of an old factory, and the accumulated time of the collection. Rather than dividing the space, the trees slowly weave together its layers of memory. Within a time without beginning or end, the world of Wondrous Presence once again takes form at Agnes Park.
Centered on hyeonmok (玄木, blackened wood), blackened wood, and painting, this exhibition rearticulates Woo Jong-taek’s long-standing inquiry into qi (氣), nature, and embodied thought within the spaces of Agnes Park. These ideas unfold anew through the sea of Geoje and the memories held by the site. The paintings establish a quiet rhythm along the walls, while the low-lying hyeonmok (玄木, blackened wood) becomes a silent axis between painting and space. The black strokes across the surfaces spread, collide, and disperse; on the floor, the hyeonmok remains as though those strokes have briefly acquired a material body. Their energy extends beyond the gallery, reaching toward the waters of Gyeonnaeryang.
The sea between Geoje and Tongyeong is inseparable from the history of the Battle of Hansan. Beneath its quiet surface today, it carries the deep time of events that have passed and memories that remain. In much the same way, the blackened hyeonmok holds within it both the time of a once-living tree and the traces of its cutting. The wood and the sea are different materials, yet they meet in their capacity to contain invisible time within silence.
