어둠 속의 예언자 The Prophet in the Darkness

《어둠 속의 예언자》는 뉴로모픽 공학을 연구하는 박종길 공학박사(KIST 선임연구원)와의 대화에서 출발합니다. 방앤리와 박종길 박사는 《AVS artist view science 과학을 바라보는 예술가의 시선 : 내추럴 레플리카》(2023, 김희수아트센터)을 계기로 작품의 바탕이 되는 이론적인 틀을 강화했을 뿐 아니라 작가 나름의 예술적 사유를 통해 더욱 풍부하고 섬세한 작품을 탄생시켰습니다. 

인간의 뇌를 모사한 뉴로모픽 칩을 장착한 초지능 AI. ‘AI 예언자’ 시스템이 탑재된 완전자율주행 자동차가 상용화된 미래 사회의 풍경은 어떤 모습일까요? 협업의 과정에서 발생한 질문은 ‘청문회’와 ‘사건의 재구성’이라는 예술적 실험으로 귀결됩니다. 인간을 대신해 모든 판단과 결정을 내리는 인공지능 시스템은 마치 불확실한 시대에 등장한 ‘예언자’처럼 보입니다. 인공지능 시스템에 대한 의존성이 높아지는 가운데, 우리는 AI의 예측 오류와 실수의 가능성에 대한 질문을 제기합니다. 

전시는 디지털 휴먼으로 제작된 AI 예언자의 청문회라는 가상의 시나리오를 통해 인공지능 기술이 재현하는 새로운 시간의 개념을 비롯해 과학기술 윤리와 딜레마, 다양한 영역에 걸친 기술의 영향에 대한 또 다른 질문을 촉발함으로써 관객에게 새로운 사고의 틈과 사색의 자리를 제공하고자 합니다.

“The Prophet in the Darkness” commences with a dialogue with Dr. Jongkil Park, a senior researcher at KIST specializing in neuromorphic engineering. The program “AVS: Artist View of Science” with Dr. Park not only fortified the theoretical framework within which the work unfolds but also enriched the artistic musings of Bang & Lee, rendering them intricate and profound.

The exhibition’s backdrop is set in a technological society where fully autonomous vehicles have been commercialized, driven by super-intelligent AI. Additionally, AI Prophet, equipped with neuromorphic chips simulating the human brain, inhabits this landscape. In a period of uncertainty, an AI system assuming the role of making judgments and decisions on behalf of humans takes on an almost prophetic demeanor. 

This narrative delves into the implications of AI’s fallibility in prediction, especially in the presence of steadfast faith in artificial intelligence systems.

Through the medium of AI-mediated synesthetic experiences, the exhibition strives to cultivate a space for introspection among its audience. By prompting inquiries into the nature of time, the ethical quandaries posed by technology, and the multifaceted impact of artificial intelligence across various domains, the exhibit aims to stimulate independent thought and contemplation.
