방앤리는 방자영과 이윤준으로 구성된 2인 컬렉티브이다. 뉴미디어 아트 설치를 바탕으로 전개되어 온 이들의 프로젝트는 인터랙티브 미디어 아트, 키네틱 라이트, 센서 기반 악기 등이 등장하는 실험적인 무대와 닮았다. 장소와 상황에 따라 변형되는 설치는 가변적이며 작품의 재배치에 따라 또 다른 면으로 확장되면서 일종의 프랙털 구조를 만든다. 대부분 부조리한 상황이나 모순과 관련된 프로젝트의 주제는 역사적 자료와 허구적 속성을 통합하여 미디어와 테크놀로지의 관계, 우정과 협업의 개념을 재해석한 내용으로 반영된다. 방앤리의 작업은 독일 카를스루에 예술과 미디어 센터, 이탈리아 로마 21세기 국립현대미술관, 프랑스 마르세유 라 프리쉬, 중국 상해 현대미술관, 백남준 아트센터, 서울시립미술관, 아르코미술관, 아트센터 나비, 대안공간 루프, 토탈미술관 등에서 전시되었다.

Transparent Study는 집안의 서재에 놓인 (예술) 스터디와 그 과정상에 수집된 것, 컬렉션의 진열, 또 레퍼런스 카드의 보관함이 우리의 사적인 공간에서 전시/재현된 공론의 장으로 옮겨진 상태라고 할 수 있다. 보르헤스의 바벨의 도서관처럼 오늘날 디지털 정보 사회의 혼란스러운 일면을 반영하는 메시지를 전달하는 텍스트, 조명, 영상들이 앗상블라주로 구성되어 있으며 책장처럼 서 있는 설치는 여러 해석이 가능한 공간으로 확장된다. 분리된 공간을 만들어내는 책장은 벽이 되거나 문이 된다. 내부를 관통하여 안과 밖, 앞면과 뒷면의 구분이 모호한 상태를 재현한다. 화면 위로 떠오르는 이미지, 유리와 거울의 표면에 비치는 내부, 이 투명에 가까운 스크린은 또 다른 장막을 드리운다. 바벨의 도서관에서 도서관, 즉 인류의 지식의 총체는 우주와 영원을 상징하지만 우리는 각자의 경험이 축적된 도서관에서 미궁에 빠진 세상, 혼돈 속에서 신의 문을 통과하고자 헤매는 인간의 모습을 떠올릴 수 있다.i) 지금의 도서관은 ‘한정된 글자의 무한한 수열로 채워진 육각형 갤러리’인 바벨의 도서관이라기보다는 오히려 ‘투명한 도서관’에 가깝다. 무한한 정보들을 실시간 보여주는 곳. 그 도서관은 투명해서 불투명함이나 혼돈, 거짓된 것은 허용하지 않는 것처럼 보인다. 값싼 디지털 저장 장치, 손쉬운 검색, 글로벌 네트워크 환경을 통해 정보의 속성은 망각을 잃어버린 채 급진적인 패러다임의 변화, 즉 투명성을 향해 가속도를 붙이고 있다. 거의 모든 언어로 모든 정보를 쉽게 찾을 수 있고 이 정보가 투명하다는 신뢰를 바탕으로 지금 인류의 지식체계는 빅 데이터가 지배하는 통제 불능의 감시사회에 기여하고 있다.ii)
서재는 개인의 애장 도서가 포함된 공간으로 기억의 장소다. 마치 책장에 꽂힌 책이 조금씩 달라지듯, 우리 나름의 지식과 정보, 레퍼런스와 컬렉션은 시간이 지나면서 기억 보관 장소의 먼지를 털어내고 새것으로 갈아 끼워진다. 정보의 바다와 데이터의 홍수 속에 우리는 기억/망각의 과정이 교차하는 지점에서 길을 잃고 나열된 정보와 데이터 더미 속에서 가치 있는 지식을 추출해 내는 추상화 과정, 사유의 능력을 점차 잃어버리게 된다. 사회와 분리된 장소, 사적인 개인의 공간, 거실, 서재와 같은 비밀의 방이 모두 투명성을 요구하는 사회와 문화에서 스스로 원하든 아니든 쉽게 외부에 노출된다. 이제 사적이고 비밀스러운 분리된 공간은 일상에 쉼터를 마련해 주지 못한다. 설치에서 재현된 장소는 다분히 연극적이며 이중적인 공간이다. 원래 서재란 은밀한 장소이기에 우리 삶에서 시간이 지남에 따라 때때로 변하는 관점 및 가치를 대표하는 지식과 정보의 혼합물로 채워져 있다. 투명한 서재란 이러한 내면의 공간이 겉으로 드러난 상태로 무한한 정보들이 넘실대는 오늘날 정보 사회의 도서관을 뜻하기도 한다. 이 투명한 서재를 관통하는 것의 핵심은 정보의 즉각적인 공개와 공유, 더욱 정교해지는 투명성 요구에 따라 엄청난 양의 데이터나 백과사전적 지식이 사색의 공간을 대신(차지)한다는 것이다. 물론 이 서재의 레퍼런스들은 늘 최적화된 훌륭한 스터디의 과정과 최고의 책들로만 구성된 도서 진열을 투명하게 보여주지는 못한다. 이것들은 오히려 일종의 방향성 없는 정보 수집에 관한 기호나 호기심, 지적 허영과 쓸모없이 곧 소멸해 가는 지식을 반영하는 스터디로써 디지털 시대의 원형감옥에서 정처 없이 떠돌아다니는 사용자의 의미 없는 관심사를 드러낼 뿐이다.
i) 히브리어 Babel은 혼란, 무질서란 뜻인데 아시리아어로 Babili는 신의 문(Gate of God)을 뜻하며 Babylon이란 지명도 여기서 유래한다.
ii) 인터넷을 지배하는 구글과 같은 기업은 투명성 강화에 힘을 쏟고 있다. 구글의 투명성 보고서(Transparency Report)는 정보 접근(Access to information)에 관해 “법규와 정책이 인터넷 사용자 및 온라인상의 정보 흐름에 미치는 영향을 보여주는 데이터(Data that sheds light on how laws and policies affect Internet users and the flow of information online)”라고 밝히고 있다. 투명성 강화를 위한 진정서(A petition for greater transparency)에서 밝히듯, 과연 “국가 기밀사항의 수위가 민주사회의 핵심인 기본적인 자유를 훼손(the levels of secrecy that have built up around national security requests undermine the basic freedoms that are at the heart of a democratic society)”하는지는 의문이다.

Bang & Lee is an artist collective based in Seoul. Transparent Study is a display of our personal space such as study (art) and what is collected along the way in the activity of learning, display of collections, and a cabinet of reference card moved to the exhibited/represented public space. Like The Library of Babel of Borges, the texts, lightings and images deliver a message that reflects current digital information society’s disorderly and chaotic aspect and are composed in assemblage. The installation standing like a bookcase built in sections in one’s study (room) can be expanded to the space where different interpretations are possible and becomes a facade or a door disguised as a bookshelf. The circulation of installation space goes through inside, which represents an ambiguous status of the front and the back. The image appeared on the several monitors, the inside reflected on the surface of the glass and mirror… and this nearly transparent screen drapes on another curtain. In The Library of Babel, the library that is the whole of human knowledge representing the universe and eternity, but in our own library where our experience is accumulated, we are reminded of the human image, who wanders around to pass through the gate of God in the world of mystery and chaos. i) The present library seems close to the ‘transparent study’ rather than the one in The Library of Babel that consists of an enormous expanse of hexagonal galleries filled with an infinite sequence of numbers. A study is expressed as a place to show infinite information in real time. A library is too transparent so does not seem to allow any opacity, confusion and untruth. Cheap digital storage, easy retrieval, and via the global network environment made the revolutionary paradigm shift, that is, the acceleration towards transparency, the attribute of information has lost the ability of forgetting. A quick search finds in almost every language in the world, and one can easily access to all information that is supposed to be transparent, the system of human knowledge contributes to the surveillance society dominated by ‘Big Data’ and becomes out of control.
A study is where personal favourite books are stored and thus becoming a place of memory. But as the books on the shelf are changing, hence are our knowledge, information, reference and collection dust off the memory storage place and be replaced with new things with the flow of time. In the sea of information and the flood of data, we are lost at the intersection of memory/oblivion process and gradually lose the ability to abstract valuable knowledge among the listed fragments of information and data stack, and lose how to think and reason. A place separated from the society, private space, living room, and secret chamber like our own study, all kinds of space are easily exposed to the outside, whether we want to or not, in the society and culture more requiring transparency. Now, private, secret, and separated space could no longer provide a shelter in daily life. The installation place is somewhat theatrical and twofold. Originally, a study is a secret venue, and filled with mixture of knowledge and information that represent changing perspectives and values over time in our lifetimes. Transparent Study, seemingly exposed the inner space, means the library in our society overflowed with limitless information. The key to Transparent Study is that a great amount of data or encyclopedic knowledge replaces the space of meditation as there is an increasing demand for an immediate revealing and sharing of information and more delicate transparency. Transparent Study reflects not an optimised, excellent study process, nor a collection of the best books, but rather reveals a study where taste, curiosity, intellectual vanity and soon to be useless, extinguishing knowledge related to information collection without direction. It describes endlessly wandering self in the Panopticon of the digital age.
i) According to the Bible, the city name ‘Babel’ in Hebrew means chaos and ‘the Gate of God’ in Akkadian.
ii) Like Google, companies dominating the Internet, try to enhance transparency. ‘Transparency Report’ of Google describes that “data that sheds light on how laws and policies affect Internet users and the flow of information online” on the page of ‘access to information.’ As written in the section of ‘a petition for greater transparency’, Google has stated that “the levels of secrecy that have built up around national security requests undermine the basic freedoms that are at the heart of a democratic society.” It may be asked whether it would undermine freedom or not.
