한국 최초의 사립 현대 미술관인 토탈미술관은 1976년 동숭동 대학로에서 토탈갤러리로 시작하여, 1984년 경기도 장흥에 야외 조각 공원을 갖춘 미술관을 설립하였습니다. 국내에 미술관 개념이 정립되지 않았던 시기에 출범한 토탈미술관은 예술가의 실험 정신과 창의적인 활력을 지원하기 위해 제도적 기반을 마련하고, 문화 생산자로서의 역할에 충실했습니다.
1992년 서울시 종로구 평창동으로 이전 후, 현대미술 전시 뿐만 아니라, 음악회, 아카데미, 출판 등 다양한 장르의 예술을 아우르며 현대 예술 전반을 통섭하는 복합문화공간으로 자리매김했습니다.
“생활 속의 열린 예술 공간”이란 설립 이념을 바탕으로, 토탈미술관은 문화예술계 내의 다양성을 확대하고 접근성을 높이기 위해 노력해왔습니다. 앞으로도 예술을 매개로 보다 많은 이들과 교류하며 미술관의 지속 가능한 사회적 역할을 이어나갈 것입니다.

Founded in 1976 as Total Gallery in Daehak-ro, Seoul, Total Museum of Contemporary Art (TMCA) is Korea’s first private contemporary art museum. In 1984, the museum established a new venue in Jangheung, Gyeonggi Province, complete with an outdoor sculpture park. At a time when the concept of art museums was still unfamiliar in Korea, TMCA laid the institutional groundwork to support artists’ experimental spirit and creative energy, fulfilling its role as a cultural producer.
Since relocating to Pyeongchang-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul in 1992, the museum has evolved into a multidisciplinary cultural space that not only presents contemporary art exhibitions, but also hosts concerts, educational programs, and publications.
Upholding its founding philosophy as an “open space for art in everyday life,” TMCA has continually worked to expand diversity within the cultural and artistic landscape and enhance public accessibility. Looking ahead, the museum remains committed to its sustainable role in society by fostering connections through art and engaging with broader communities.
