일(ㄱ)자회 TMCA Sunday Book Club
일(ㄱ)자회는 2022년 토탈미술관 기획전시 《비커밍의 기술(Techniques of Becoming)》 연계 워크숍에서 시작되어, 정기 모임으로 자리 잡은 토탈미술관의 예술 독서 커뮤니티입니다.
매주 일요일에 진행되는 일(ㄱ)자회는 매달 한 권의 도서를 선정해 미술관에 모여 함께 읽고, 각자의 생각을 자유롭게 나누는 방식으로 운영됩니다. 책을 미리 완독한 뒤 정밀한 해석을 공유하기보다, 느슨하고 유연한 대화 속에서 감상과 질문을 함께 확장해가는 모임입니다.
예술가의 창작과 삶에 깊은 영향을 준 책부터, 예술가가 직접 집필한 도서까지, 다양한 도서가 일(ㄱ)자회의 추천 도서가 됩니다. 또한 매달 마지막 일요일에는 ‘야외 읽기’ 프로그램을 통해 여행, 공연, 비엔날레, 사찰 투어 등 다채로운 장소에서 모임을 확장하며, 책과 예술을 매개로 한 공동의 경험을 함께 만들어갑니다.
참석 인원과 읽을 분량, 해석의 방향은 아무것도 정해지지 않습니다. 일(ㄱ)자회는 자유로운 함께 읽기를 지향합니다.

도서 추천 작가 | 김태협(b.1985)
인천대학교 서양화전공을 졸업 후 동대학원에서 미술학과 석사를 수료했다. 최근 뉴욕 RoundK에서 개인전 <Paper Cut>을 가졌으며, <ROOM 730>, <HAPPEN> 전시 외 다수의 단체전에 참여했다. 직접 경험했던 일들이나 미디어를 통해 본 사회 속에서 사회의 제도, 대인관계가 개인의 미시적인 욕망들과 연결하여 타자화된 주체성을 형성할 수 밖에 없는 상황 속에서 나름의 정체성을 찾고자 하는 문제의식에서부터 작업을 시작하였다. 김태협은 작가 본인을 등장시켜 마치 한 편의 그림일기처럼 작품을 구성하며, 감정을 의인화하거나 소품을 사용하여 작가 스스로의 감정을 대변하기도 한다. 그는 흑백과 컬러로 나누어 작업을 하곤 하는데, 이는 내면과 외면을 구분하여 표현하기 위함이며, 색이 사라지거나 등장하는 방식을 통해서 불안감, 혼동, 욕망을 표출하려는 모습을 드러낸다.
TMCA Sunday Book Club began as a reading workshop held in conjunction with the Total Museum’s 2022 exhibition 《Techniques of Becoming》, and has since evolved into a regular, ongoing reading community hosted by the museum.
Held every Sunday, TMCA Sunday Book Club selects one book each month and gathers at the museum to read and exchange thoughts. Rather than requiring participants to complete the book in advance or offer thorough analyses, the group fosters open-ended and flexible discussions that allow personal impressions and questions to naturally unfold.
Reading selections range from books that have profoundly influenced the lives and practices of artists, to works authored by artists themselves. On the last Sunday of each month, the group expands its scope through an “Outdoor Reading” program, which explores diverse locations such as travel destinations, performances, biennales, and temple tours—creating shared experiences centered around books and art.
There are no fixed rules about attendance, reading pace, or interpretive direction. TMCA Sunday Book Club values the freedom of reading together.

Book Recommended by | KIM Taehyup (b.1985)
After completing his BFA in Western Painting at Incheon National University, Kim Taehyup finished the coursework for his MFA in Fine Arts at the same institution. Most recently, he held a solo exhibition, Paper Cut, at RoundK in New York, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions including ROOM 730 and HAPPEN.
Kim’s practice originates from a critical inquiry into the ways in which institutional structures and interpersonal relationships within contemporary society—whether directly experienced or mediated through mass media—inevitably shape an objectified subjectivity by intersecting with the individual’s micro-level desires. His work often features himself as a central figure, unfolding like a visual diary in which emotions are personified or represented through various props that stand in for the artist’s internal state.
Kim frequently works in both monochrome and color as a means to delineate the internal and external realms. Through the disappearance or emergence of color, he reveals expressions of anxiety, confusion, and desire that fluctuate between these psychological and perceptual boundaries.
