일(ㄱ)자회 TMCA Sunday Book Club
일(ㄱ)자회는 2022년 토탈미술관 기획전시 《비커밍의 기술(Techniques of Becoming)》 연계 워크숍에서 시작되어, 정기 모임으로 자리 잡은 토탈미술관의 예술 독서 커뮤니티입니다.
매주 일요일에 진행되는 일(ㄱ)자회는 매달 한 권의 도서를 선정해 미술관에 모여 함께 읽고, 각자의 생각을 자유롭게 나누는 방식으로 운영됩니다. 책을 미리 완독한 뒤 정밀한 해석을 공유하기보다, 느슨하고 유연한 대화 속에서 감상과 질문을 함께 확장해가는 모임입니다.
예술가의 창작과 삶에 깊은 영향을 준 책부터, 예술가가 직접 집필한 도서까지, 다양한 도서가 일(ㄱ)자회의 추천 도서가 됩니다. 또한 매달 마지막 일요일에는 ‘야외 읽기’ 프로그램을 통해 여행, 공연, 비엔날레, 사찰 투어 등 다채로운 장소에서 모임을 확장하며, 책과 예술을 매개로 한 공동의 경험을 함께 만들어갑니다.
참석 인원과 읽을 분량, 해석의 방향은 아무것도 정해지지 않습니다. 일(ㄱ)자회는 자유로운 함께 읽기를 지향합니다.

도서 추천 작가 | 최건 (b.1973)
1999년 그래피티를 시작한 최건은 ‘그래피티란 무엇인가’라는 근원적 질문을 끊임없이 다시 돌아보게 만드는 다양한 방식의 그래피티(라고 부를 수 있을지조차 애매한)를 실험하고 있다. 거리에서 이뤄지는 작업을 소재, 대상의 구분 없이 끌어들여 오거나 택배, 방, 흙, 가구, 액션캠, 건물, 천, 지도 앱 등으로 이것저것 발명한다.
유전적 병증을 계기로 나를 벗어난 시각은 어떻게 가능할까 고민하던 중 사물이 보는 것을 ‘물경(thingscape)’으로 이름 붙이고, ‘물경’에 접근하는 여러가지 방법을 궁리하고 있다.

지난여름 ‘공감은 어떻게 가능할까요?’라는 물음으로 지원한 레지던시에서 그림을 그리고 이야기를 나눴습니다. 시를 쓰고 서로 주고받은 편지를 모아 이정식 작가님이 책으로 만들어주셨어요.
잠을 자고 해가 바뀌고 지하철을 타고 가다 그런 생각이 들었습니다.
거창하게 말하자면 결국 그건 ‘대화란 무엇일까’였나 싶어요.

TMCA Sunday Book Club began as a reading workshop held in conjunction with the Total Museum’s 2022 exhibition 《Techniques of Becoming》, and has since evolved into a regular, ongoing reading community hosted by the museum.
Held every Sunday, TMCA Sunday Book Club selects one book each month and gathers at the museum to read and exchange thoughts. Rather than requiring participants to complete the book in advance or offer thorough analyses, the group fosters open-ended and flexible discussions that allow personal impressions and questions to naturally unfold.
Reading selections range from books that have profoundly influenced the lives and practices of artists, to works authored by artists themselves. On the last Sunday of each month, the group expands its scope through an “Outdoor Reading” program, which explores diverse locations such as travel destinations, performances, biennales, and temple tours—creating shared experiences centered around books and art.
There are no fixed rules about attendance, reading pace, or interpretive direction. TMCA Sunday Book Club values the freedom of reading together.

Since beginning graffiti in 1999, Choi Geon has been experimenting with various forms of what might—or might not—be called graffiti, constantly revisiting the fundamental question: What is graffiti? His practice draws from and intervenes in street-based work, unconstrained by materials or subject matter. From delivery boxes, rooms, soil, furniture, and action cameras to buildings, fabric, and map apps, he invents through an eclectic range of mediums and situations.
Prompted by a genetic illness, he began to question the possibility of seeing beyond the self. This led him to coin the term “thingscape”, referring to what is seen by objects rather than by humans. He continues to explore and devise multiple approaches to access this nonhuman perspective.

There are conversations like this:
you sit face to face for three or four hours, yet move no more than an inch beyond misunderstanding.
