2026년, 한국과 프랑스가 수교 140주년을 맞이하는 뜻깊은 해에 토탈미술관은 개관 50주년을 기념하여 ‘Collector/tion’ 프로젝트를 새롭게 시작한다. 첫 전시의 주인공은 프랑스의 저명한 컬렉터 카트린과 레나토 카시아니(Catherine & Renato CASCIANI)이다. 이들의 참여는 양국의 오랜 문화적 유대를 확인하며, 동시대 예술의 미래를 함께 조망한다는 점에서 각별한 의미를 지닌다.
카트린과 레나토 카시아니는 프랑스 북부 릴(Lille)을 기반으로 활동하며, 30여 년간 예술을 통해 세상과 소통해 온 컬렉터이다. 그들에게 예술은 개인의 소유물을 넘어선 ‘공유’와 ‘관계’의 매개체다. 16쌍의 부부가 작품을 공동 구매하고 순환 전시하는 ‘카드로 블랑(Cadre blanc)’ 프로젝트를 주도하고, 비디오 아트 페어 ‘어라운드 비디오(Around Video)’를 창립한 이들의 행보는 컬렉팅이 어떻게 개인의 취향을 넘어 사회적 연대와 문화적 공공성으로 확장될 수 있는지를 여실히 보여준다.
본 프로젝트의 첫 번째 전시의 제목 《Catherine & Renato CASCIANI: Somebody has to collect it》 은 지난 50년간 한국 현대미술의 터전을 닦아온 토탈미술관의 역사 위에서, 국경을 넘어 예술의 생태계를 지탱해 온 한 컬렉터의 진지한 시선을 조명한다. 카시아니 컬렉션은 인간의 자아와 취약함(Fragility), 그리고 그 이면에 숨겨진 역설적인 힘에 질문을 던지며, “누군가는 반드시 이 시대의 목소리를 수집하고 기록해야 한다”는 수집가로서의 소명 의식을 증명한다.
한불수교 140주년과 토탈미술관의 50년 역사가 교차하는 이 지점에서, 이제 여러분을 한 컬렉터의 내밀한 세계로 초대한다. 국경을 허물고 우리를 연결하는 예술의 힘을 마주하며, 우리 시대에 예술을 수집하고 간직한다는 것이 각자에게 어떤 의미로 다가오는지 함께 탐색해 보길 제안한다.

In 2026, a meaningful year marking the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France, Total Museum of Contemporary Art launches a new project titled Collector/tion in celebration of its 50th anniversary. The first exhibition features the renowned French collectors Catherine & Renato CASCIANI. Their participation carries special significance, reaffirming the long-standing cultural ties between the two countries while offering a shared perspective on the future of contemporary art.
Based in Lille, in northern France, Catherine and Renato Casciani have spent over 30 years engaging with the world through art. For them, art is not merely something to be owned, but a medium of “sharing” and “connection.” Their initiatives—such as Cadre blanc, a project in which 16 couples collectively acquire and circulate artworks, and the founding of the video art fair Around Video—demonstrate how collecting can extend beyond individual taste to foster social solidarity and cultural publicness.
Titled Catherine & Renato CASCIANI: Somebody Has to Collect It, the first exhibition of this project sheds light on the thoughtful vision of collectors who have supported the ecosystem of art beyond national borders, set against the 50-year history of Total Museum of Contemporary Art, which has played a foundational role in Korean contemporary art. The Casciani Collection raises questions about the human self and fragility, as well as the paradoxical strength that lies beneath, affirming the collector’s sense of calling: “Someone must collect and preserve the voices of our time.”
At this intersection of the 140th anniversary of France–Korea diplomatic relations and the museum’s 50-year history, we invite you into the intimate world of these collectors.
