2026년, 토탈미술관은 ‘Collector/tion’ 프로젝트를 새롭게 시작한다. 한국과 프랑스가 수교 140주년을 맞이하는 뜻깊은 해를 기념하여 첫 전시의 주인공은 프랑스의 저명한 컬렉터 카트린과 레나토 카시아니(Catherine & Renato CASCIANI)이다. 이들의 참여는 양국의 오랜 문화적 유대를 확인하며, 동시대 예술의 미래를 함께 조망한다는 점에서 각별한 의미를 지닌다.

카트린과 레나토 카시아니는 프랑스 북부 릴(Lille)을 기반으로 활동하며, 30여 년간 예술을 통해 세상과 소통해 온 컬렉터이다. 그들에게 예술은 개인의 소유물을 넘어선 ‘공유’와 ‘관계’의 매개체다. 16쌍의 부부가 작품을 공동 구매하고 순환 전시하는 ‘카드르 블랑(Cadre blanc)’ 프로젝트를 주도하고, 비디오 아트 페어 ‘어라운드 비디오(Around Video)’를 창립한 이들의 행보는 컬렉팅이 어떻게 개인의 취향을 넘어 사회적 연대와 문화적 공공성으로 확장될 수 있는지를 여실히 보여준다.

본 프로젝트의 첫 번째 전시의 제목 《Catherine & Renato CASCIANI: Somebody has to collect it》 은 지난 50년간 한국 현대미술의 터전을 닦아온 토탈미술관의 역사 위에서, 국경을 넘어 예술의 생태계를 지탱해 온 한 컬렉터의 진지한 시선을 조명한다. 카시아니 컬렉션은 인간의 자아와 취약함(Fragility), 그리고 그 이면에 숨겨진 역설적인 힘에 질문을 던지며, “누군가는 반드시 이 시대의 목소리를 수집하고 기록해야 한다”는 수집가로서의 소명 의식을 증명한다.

한불수교 140주년과 토탈미술관의 50년 역사가 교차하는 이 지점에서, 국경을 허물고 우리를 연결하는 예술의 힘을 마주하며, 우리 시대에 예술을 수집하고 간직한다는 것이 각자에게 어떤 의미로 다가오는지 함께 탐색해 보길 바란다.

In 2026, a meaningful year marking the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France, Total Museum of Contemporary Art launches a new project titled Collector/tion in celebration of its 50th anniversary. The first exhibition features the renowned French collectors Catherine & Renato CASCIANI. Their participation carries special significance, reaffirming the long-standing cultural ties between the two countries while offering a shared perspective on the future of contemporary art.

Based in Lille, in northern France, Catherine and Renato Casciani have spent over 30 years engaging with the world through art. For them, art is not merely something to be owned, but a medium of “sharing” and “connection.” Their initiatives—such as Cadre blanc, a project in which 16 couples collectively acquire and circulate artworks, and the founding of the video art fair Around Video—demonstrate how collecting can extend beyond individual taste to foster social solidarity and cultural publicness.

Titled Catherine & Renato CASCIANI: Somebody Has to Collect It, the first exhibition of this project sheds light on the thoughtful vision of collectors who have supported the ecosystem of art beyond national borders, set against the 50-year history of Total Museum of Contemporary Art, which has played a foundational role in Korean contemporary art. The Casciani Collection raises questions about the human self and fragility, as well as the paradoxical strength that lies beneath, affirming the collector’s sense of calling: “Someone must collect and preserve the voices of our time.”

At this intersection of the 140th anniversary of France–Korea diplomatic relations and the museum’s 50-year history, we invite you into the intimate world of these collectors. Encounter the power of art that transcends borders and connects us, and consider what it means, for each of us, to collect and preserve art in our time.

아야코 록카쿠 《Breathing with the Chaos》

토탈미술관은 2025년 겨울, 일본 출신 동시대 작가 아야코 록카쿠(Ayako Rokkaku)의 개인전 《Breathing with the Chaos》를 개최한다. 전시는 최근 작업에서 두드러지는 색채의 호흡, 제스처의 반복적 생성·소멸, 화면 전체의 감각적 밀도에 주목한다.

록카쿠의 회화는 전통적 도구 대신 ‘손’을 중심으로 이루어진다. 손바닥과 손가락 끝을 직접 화면에 접촉시키는 방식은 회화를 기술적 재현이 아닌 감각적 사건으로 전환하며, 물감의 확장과 번짐은 작가의 신체적 반응과 시간의 층위를 고스란히 드러낸다. 이는 화면을 하나의 ‘감각이 응결된 표면’으로 이해하게 한다.

초기에는 캐릭터적 형상이 두드러졌으나, 최근의 작업은 이미지의 해체와 감각적 리듬으로 이동해 왔다. 대상보다 색채의 진동과 제스처의 흐름이 중심이 되면서, 관람자는 화면을 보는 것을 넘어 감응하는 경험에 가까워진다. 록카쿠는 혼돈 속에서 발생하는 색채와 움직임을 그대로 수용하며, 밀고 퍼뜨리고 다시 모아내는 반복적 행위를 통해 회화를 하나의 호흡적 과정으로 확장한다.

작가가 손으로 그린다는 사실은 회화의 물질성과 신체성을 극대화하며, 디지털 이미지 환경 속에서도 회화가 지닌 근원적 감각성을 재확인하게 한다. 이번 전시는 이러한 특성을 강조하기 위해 전시장 전체를 ‘호흡하는 회화적 공간’으로 구성하며, 함께 제시되는 브론즈 및 채색 조각 20여 점은 회화적 제스처의 입체적 확장으로 기능한다.

《Breathing with the Chaos》는 록카쿠 회화의 동시대적 의의를 조명한다. 그의 화면은 혼돈과 질서, 생성과 소멸이 교차하는 역동적 장으로, 손을 통한 회화 행위가 신체와 감각을 기반으로 세계를 재구성하는 근본적 예술임을 다시 확인하게 한다.

Total Museum will present 《Breathing with the Chaos》, a solo exhibition by Japanese contemporary artist Ayako Rokkaku, in the winter of 2025. The exhibition focuses on the recent developments in her practice, particularly the breathing quality of color, the cyclical emergence and dissolution of gestures, and the heightened sensory density across the pictorial surface.

Rokkaku’s painting is grounded in the use of her hands rather than traditional tools. Applying pigment directly with her palms and fingertips shifts painting from technical representation to a sensory event, as the spreading and absorption of paint reveal bodily responses and temporal layers. This method transforms the canvas into a “surface where sensation condenses.”

While her early works were characterized by figurative, character-like imagery, her recent practice moves toward the dissolution of images and the exploration of sensory rhythm. As color vibrations and gestural movements take precedence over identifiable subjects, viewers encounter the work through a mode closer to affective resonance than visual recognition. By embracing the chromatic and gestural turbulence that arises within the surface, Rokkaku extends painting into a process akin to breathing through repeated actions of pushing, dispersing, and gathering paint.

Her use of the hand amplifies the materiality and physicality of painting, reaffirming the medium’s fundamental sensory potential even within a digital image–driven environment. To emphasize these qualities, the exhibition configures the entire gallery as a “breathing pictorial space,” accompanied by more than twenty bronze and polychrome sculptures that function as three-dimensional extensions of her painterly gestures.

《Breathing with the Chaos》 highlights the contemporary significance of Rokkaku’s work. Her canvases form a dynamic field where chaos and order, emergence and dissolution intersect, reaffirming painting—grounded in bodily gesture and sensory perception—as a vital means of understanding and reconstructing the world.

2022년 약 일 년 동안 진행한 《열 개의 달과 세 개의 터널》은 자하문 안팎 경계 지역의 장소성과 지형지물인 삼거리 육교, 세 개의 터널 그리고 쇼윈도 갤러리를 타임머신으로 설정하고, 예술가들의 SF 적 상상을 통해 새롭게 지역 바라보기를 시도한 아카이브 결과보고전입니다.

‘자문밖’이라는 지역에서 과연 ‘안’과 ‘밖’은 어디인지? 예술이 위계적 표상이 되어 스스로를 고립시키는 ‘것’과 ‘곳’은 아닌가? 하는 질문에서 시작하였습니다. 자연으로 둘러싸인 지역이 안팎의 경계를 넘어 예술로 소통하고 공존하는 중심점이 되길 바라는 마음으로, 1년의 모든 진행 과정을 펼쳐 놓은 《열 개의 달과 세 개의 터널》에 자하문 안과 밖의 여러분 모두를 초대합니다.
