일(ㄱ)자회 TMCA Sunday Book Club

일(ㄱ)자회는 2022년 토탈미술관 기획전시 《비커밍의 기술(Techniques of Becoming)》 연계 워크숍에서 시작되어, 정기 모임으로 자리 잡은 토탈미술관의 예술 독서 커뮤니티입니다.

매주 일요일에 진행되는 일(ㄱ)자회는 매달 한 권의 도서를 선정해 미술관에 모여 함께 읽고, 각자의 생각을 자유롭게 나누는 방식으로 운영됩니다. 책을 미리 완독한 뒤 정밀한 해석을 공유하기보다, 느슨하고 유연한 대화 속에서 감상과 질문을 함께 확장해가는 모임입니다.

예술가의 창작과 삶에 깊은 영향을 준 책부터, 예술가가 직접 집필한 도서까지, 다양한 도서가 일(ㄱ)자회의 추천 도서가 됩니다. 또한 매달 마지막 일요일에는 ‘야외 읽기’ 프로그램을 통해 여행, 공연, 비엔날레, 사찰 투어 등 다채로운 장소에서 모임을 확장하며, 책과 예술을 매개로 한 공동의 경험을 함께 만들어갑니다.

참석 인원과 읽을 분량, 해석의 방향은 아무것도 정해지지 않습니다. 일(ㄱ)자회는 자유로운 함께 읽기를 지향합니다.

도서 추천 작가 | 정연두(b.1969)
정연두는 서울대학교 조소과를 졸업하고 런던 골드스미스 대학교에서 석사 학위를 받았다. 현재 한국 서울에 거주하는 정은 사진과 비디오부터 퍼포먼스를 직간접적으로 포함하는 설치 작품까지 다양한 매체에 집중해 왔다. 작가는 일상적인 사람들의 일상적인 경험에서 소재를 찾고, 보이지 않는 서사를 탐구하고 평범한 잔여물에서 비롯된 가능성을 조사하며, 이 과정에서 그는 타인과 상호 작용하고 협업하는 관계적 방법을 사용하여 예술과 삶, 예술의 주체와 객체 사이를 이동하는 문턱을 만든다. 정연두는 2007년 국립현대미술관 서울관에서 ‘올해의 작가’ 상을 수상했으며, 국립현대미술관 서울관(2023), 울산미술관(2022), 플로리다 웨스트 팜 비치 노튼 미술관(2017), 아트선재센터 서울(2017)에서 주요 개인전을 열었다.

TMCA Sunday Book Club began as a reading workshop held in conjunction with the Total Museum’s 2022 exhibition 《Techniques of Becoming》, and has since evolved into a regular, ongoing reading community hosted by the museum.

Held every Sunday, TMCA Sunday Book Club selects one book each month and gathers at the museum to read and exchange thoughts. Rather than requiring participants to complete the book in advance or offer thorough analyses, the group fosters open-ended and flexible discussions that allow personal impressions and questions to naturally unfold.

Reading selections range from books that have profoundly influenced the lives and practices of artists, to works authored by artists themselves. On the last Sunday of each month, the group expands its scope through an “Outdoor Reading” program, which explores diverse locations such as travel destinations, performances, biennales, and temple tours—creating shared experiences centered around books and art.

There are no fixed rules about attendance, reading pace, or interpretive direction. TMCA Sunday Book Club values the freedom of reading together.

Yeondoo Jung (b.1969) graduated from Seoul National University’s Department of Sculpture and received an MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London. Currently based in Seoul, Korea, Jung has focused on a variety of mediums ranging from photography and video to installation works both directly and indirectly involving performance. Often finding his subject matter in the quotidian experiences of everyday people, he interrogates invisible narratives and examines possibilities that stem from banal residues. In this process, he uses a relational method of interacting and collaborating with others, creating a threshold for moving between art and life, as well as the subject and object of art. Jung was the recipient of the “Artist of the Year” award by the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, in 2007, and has held major solo exhibitions at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (2023); Ulsan Art Museum (2022); Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida (2017); Art Sonje Center, Seoul (2017); Musée d’Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne (MAC VAL), Vitry-sur-Seine (2015); Art Tower Mito (2014); PLATEAU, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul (2014); K11 Art space, Shanghai (2013); and PERFORMA 09, New York (2009), among other venues.

픽셀 김 개인전 《꿈의 공간과 또는 알람의 시간공간》

토탈미술관은 예술을 매개로 지역의 예술 커뮤니티를 개발하고 문화예술 플랫폼을 구축하는 다양한 프로젝트를 진행해왔다. 거제의 아그네스 파크와 협업하여 개최한 연례전시는 지역의 문화예술에 대한 접근성을 높이고, 동시대 예술가의 지역 기반 활동을 활성화하고자 기획되었다. 토탈미술관은 실험적이고 도전적인 작품으로 주목받는 신진 작가부터 한국 미술을 대표하는 국제적인 작가까지 아우르며 동시대 한국미술의 동향을 볼 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.

본 전시에서 소개하는 픽셀 김은 일상의 경험과 사회적 사건을 자신만의 조형 언어인 ‘픽셀’로 조각내어 재구성하는 작업을 통해 독자적인 작품 세계를 구축한 작가이다. 그의 작품은 선율이 느껴지는 드로잉과 과감한 색채의 변주를 통해 많은 이들에게 순수한 시각적 즐거움을 선사해왔다.

《꿈의 공간과 또는 알람의 시간공간》은 2015년 작가의 첫 개인전 이후 10년이 흐른 시점에서, 작가와 작품에 대한 비평적 해석을 잠시 유보한 채 그의 예술 세계가 어떻게 성장하고 확장되었는지를 살펴본다. 이를 위해 전시는 예술가가 구축한 세계와 그 안의 감각을 공유하는 자리를 마련하며, 작가의 가장 내밀한 장소이자 작품과 일상이 맞닿아 있는 작업실과 긴밀한 연결을 맺는다.

픽셀 김이 작업실을 떠올리며 직접 지은 전시 제목, “꿈의 공간과 또는 알람의 시간공간”은 수많은 꿈과 기억을 기록하며, 자신만의 규칙과 리듬을 따라 살아가는 삶과 작업 방식을 반영한다. 또한 그의 작업실이 지닌 시공간적 특성은 전시 구조의 토대를 이루며, 작가가 세상을 감각하는 층위를 다층적으로 시각화한다.

작가의 작업실 방문하기(영상)

Total Museum of Contemporary Art has been working on various projects to develop local art communities and build cultural platforms through art. The annual exhibition, organized in collaboration with Agnes Park in Geoje, aims to increase accessibility to local culture and art and to revitalize the community-based activities of contemporary artists. From emerging artists whose experimental and challenging works have garnered attention to international artists representing Korean art, Total Museum of Contemporary Art provides an opportunity to see the trends in contemporary Korean art.

Pixel Kim, who is featured in this exhibition, has established a unique body of work by fragmenting and reconstructing everyday experiences and social events into his own sculptural language of ‘pixels’. Through his melodious drawings and bold color variations, Kim’s work has provided many people with pure visual pleasure.

Ten years after the artist’s first solo exhibition in 2015, “Dream Space and the Temporal Space of Alarms“ examines how his artistic world has grown and expanded, putting critical interpretations of the artist and his work on hold. To this end, the exhibition creates a space to share the world the artist has constructed and the sense of being in it, and establishes a close connection with the artist’s most intimate place, his studio, where his work and daily life intersect.

The exhibition’s title, “The Dream Space and the Time Space of the Alarm,” which Pixel Kim chose himself while recalling his studio, reflects the way he lives and works, recording countless dreams and memories, and following his own rules and rhythms. The spatial and temporal characteristics of his studio also form the basis of the exhibition’s structure, visualizing the layers through which the artist perceives the world.

TMCA CineNote | 보이지 않는 수평선: 손구용 감독전

바다와 하늘을 가로지르는 수평선.
수평선이 흐려지는 순간, 두 세계를 분할하던 선은 스스로를 드러내는 것을 멈춘다. 우리는 이분법적 사고에서 벗어나 서로의 영역으로 온화하게 침범하며 어우러지는 물질들의 교환을 응시하게 된다. 영화관을 가지 않는 시대에, 영화는 무엇을 보여줄 수 있을까?
⟪보이지 않는 수평선⟫(invisible horizons 으로 명명한 스크리닝 프로그램은 경계를 무화하고 이미지의 실험을 감행하는 영화감독들의 작품을 소개하고, 상영 후에는 감독과 비평가가 진행하는 관객과의 대화를 진행하며 동시대 예술에서 ‘영화적인 것’이 의미하는 바를 모색해보고자 한다.

2024년 씨네21 영화평론상으로 등단하여 비평할동을 시작했다. 현재 영화와 미학을 공부하고 있으며, 아트선재센터, 광주비엔날레, 부산비엔날레에서, 부산국제영화제 등에서 근무했다.

김신재 큐레이터, 프로듀서 @sh_nj_ek_m
김신재는 주로 시간 기반 프로젝트를 기획하고 제작에 동행한다. 2025년 아르코미술관 «오르트 구름», 2021년 국립현대미술관 «재난과 치유»전 위성 프로젝트 ‹반향하는 동사들›, 2023년 제23회 서울국제대안영상예술페스티벌 시네미디어 포럼 주제전 «장소의 감각, 물질의 그물» 등을 기획했고, 다수의 무빙 이미지 작품 제작에 참여했다.

⟪Invisible Horizons⟫ introduces the works of filmmakers who dissolve boundaries and experiment with the moving image. Each screening is followed by an in-depth conversation between the director and a critic, inviting the audience to reflect on what “the cinematic” means in contemporary art today.

DIRECTOR | Sohn Kooyong @sohnkooyong
Born in Seoul in 1988, Sohn Kooyong has directed five films to date. His work has been invited to the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival, Jeonju International Film Festival, Mar del Plata International Film Festival, and Taiwan International Documentary Festival. His second feature, Night Walk, won the Documentary Award at the 24th Jeonju International Film Festival.

FILM CRITIC | Moon Juhwa @himooncoin
Moon Juhwa began her critical career after receiving the 2024 Cine21 Film Criticism Award. She is currently studying film and aesthetics. Her professional experience includes work at Art Sonje Center, Gwangju Biennale, Busan Biennale, and Busan International Film Festival.

Shinjae Kim primarily works on time-based projects, contributing to their curation and production. Her artistic practices explore the translation of entangled senses and materials. She has curated the exhibitions Verb, Reverb – MMCA Catastrophe and Recovery Satellite Project (2021), and Sense of Place, Web of Matter, a themed exhibition at the 23rd Seoul International ALT Cinema & Media Festival (2023). She has accompanied the production of a number of moving image works.

쇼는 계속되어야 한다.

지난 2012년 영국 런던에서 첫발을 뗀 (이하 TSMGO) 프로젝트가 2025년 4월, 캐나다 오타와에 위치한 주캐나다 한국문화원(KCCC)에서 전시된다. 이번 전시는 지난 10여 년간 다양한 도시를 순회하며 이어져 온 TSMGO의 활동을 소개하는 동시에, 한국과 캐나다의 작가-기획자 간의 새로운 연결을 모색하는 중요한 계기가 될 것이다.

11명의 한국 작가들(권오상, 김도균, 노순택, 민예은, 윤석남, 이순종, 이예은, 장파, 조영주, 홍이현숙, 흑표범)이 준비한 여행 가방이 2025년 한 해 동안 캐나다의 큐레이터들과 만날 예정이다. 큐레이터들은 관심 있는 작가의 여행 가방을 신청할 수 있으며, 이를 바탕으로 매칭된다. 매칭된 큐레이터는 약 7~10일 동안 가방을 보관하며 자유롭게 감상할 수 있다. 큐레이터는 자신의 집이나 사무실에 가방을 두고 조용히 작품을 감상하거나, 작가나 기획자를 초청해 교류의 시간을 갖는 것도 가능하다. 감상 이후에는 작가에게 보내는 메시지와 함께 사진을 첨부하여 여행 가방을 반납하며, 이 자료들은 TSMGO 공식 홈페이지(https://www.theshowmustgoon.co.kr)를 통해 공개된다.

2025년 4월 15일부터 시작하는 이번 전시는 TSMGO 프로젝트의 철학과 실천을 집약적으로 보여주는 자리로, 한국 현대미술 작가들이 국경을 넘어 새로운 만남과 대화를 만들어가는 또 하나의 시작점이 될 것이다. ‘보여주는 전시’를 넘어 ‘직접 만나고 느끼는 예술 교류’의 가능성을 확장하며, 한국과 캐나다의 예술적 대화를 이어가는 중요한 계기가 될 것으로 기대된다.

The Show Must Go on

The TSMGO project, which was first launched in London, England in 2012, will be exhibited at the Korean Cultural Centre Canada (KCCC) in Ottawa, Canada in April 2025. This exhibition will be an important opportunity to introduce TSMGO’s activities, which have been touring various cities over the past decade, and to seek new connections between Korean and Canadian writers and planners.

The suitcases prepared by 11 Korean writers (GWON Osang, KDK, NOH Suntag, MIN Ye-Eun, YUN Suknam, LEE Soonjong, LEE Yeeun, Jang Pa, CHO Youngjoo, HONG LEE Hyunsook, Black Jaguar) will meet with Canadian curators throughout 2025. Curators can apply for suitcases by interested artists, which are matched based on them. Matched curators can freely appreciate the bags while storing them for about seven to 10 days. Curators can also quietly leave their bags at their home or office, or invite writers or planners to exchange time. After the appreciation, the suitcases are returned with a photo attached along with a message to the artist, and these materials will be released on TSMGO’s official website (https://www.theshowmustgoon.co.kr ).

The exhibition, which starts on April 15, 2025, will be an intensive demonstration of the philosophy and practice of the TSMGO project, and will be another starting point for Korean contemporary artists to create new encounters and conversations across borders. It is expected to be an important opportunity to continue artistic dialogue between Korea and Canada, expanding the possibility of “in-person artistic exchange” beyond “showy exhibitions.”

“쇼는 계속 되어야 한다.”

TSMGO_Canada는 2023년 한국-캐나다 수교 60주년을 맞이하여, 한국과 캐나다의 예술가-큐레이터 네트워킹 프로젝트이다. 2024년 본 프로젝트가 진행되기 앞서 2023년 10월4일-10월14일에 리서치 트립을 통해서 관련기관 및 큐레이터 미팅, TSMGO 쇼케이스, 작가와의 대화 (홍이현숙, 흑표범), TSMGO 워크숍, 한국페미니즘 예술 및 예술가에 관한 특강을 진행하였다. 이번 프로젝트를 통하여 한국과 캐나다 예술가 및 큐레이터 네트워크 플랫폼을 구축하고 다양한 기관, 미술관계자들에게 국제예술교류의 장을 마련하고자 한다.

TSMGO_Cnada 프로젝트에 협력한 캐나다 토론토에 위치한 로열온타리오박물관 Royal Ontario Museum (ROM)은 1914년에 개관하여 고고 유물부터 현대미술품까지 천 오백만 여점에 이르는 매우 다양하고 방대한 컬렉션을 자랑하는 북미 지역의 대표적인 박물관이다. 특히 캐나다 소재 박물관으로는 유일하게 한국미술 상설전시실과 프로그램을 운영중인 해외 소재 한국문화재의 중요 소장기관으로 한국 예술계와는 2015년부터 2016년까지 국외소재문화재재단에서 ROM이 소장한 한국문화재 1,400여 점 조사하였으며 2018년에는 13번째 국외 한국문화재 총서 <캐나다 로열 온타리오 박물관 소장 한국문화재>를 발간하였으며 2022년에는 : 한국 K-pop 밴드, P1 Harmony 등 공연을 진행한 바 있다.

“The show must go on.”

Canada invited TSMGO as a Korean-Canadian artist-curator networking project, celebrating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and Canada in 2023. Prior to this project in 2024, a research trip was held from October 5th to October 15th, 2023, meeting with related institutions and curators, TSMGO showcase, conversation with artists (Hyunsook Hong, Black Panther), TSMGO workshop, Korean feminist art and special lectures on artists. Through this project, we intend to build a network platform for Korean and Canadian artists and curators, and provide opportunities for international art exchange to various institutions and art museums.

The Royal Ontario Museum
The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), located in Toronto, Canada, opened in 1914 and is a representative museum in North America that boasts a very diverse and vast collection ranging from archaeological artifacts to modern art pieces ranging from 15 million pieces. In particular, it is the only museum in Canada that operates a permanent exhibition room for Korean art and is an important collection institution for Korean cultural assets overseas. In 2018, the 13th series of overseas Korean cultural properties was published, and in 2022, performance was placed with Korean K-pop band, P1 Harmony, etc.

TSMGO Process
1) 6 artists from S.Korea will participate in TSMGO2023 Canada
2) we invited 3 curators from abroad.
3) we transport suitcases to curators. Each curator has suitcases.
4) curators keep suitcases where s/he would like to keep for one month.
it does not have to be installed or open to the public, make exhibition.
s/he can have them in the house, or the office any place where s/he wants to have.
the curator sent a photo of suitcases in her/his places.
5) after few months, s/he returns them to us. (using our DHL account) with short comments on work.

메타 토탈-안성은 드림 블라썸 아카데미(Dream Blossom Academy)의 활동을 아카이빙한 전시를 개최합니다. 드림 블라썸 아카데미는 토탈미술관과 중구 장애인 복지관 그리고 전문 예술가들이 모여 발달 장애인의 창조적인 예술 활동을 지원하기 위해 마련한 예술 교육의 장으로서 계속해서 전문 예술가 양성 교육을 진행하고 있습니다.
토탈미술관 안성 분관의 전신은 1997년도에 국내 최초로 기획된 아티스트 호텔이었으나, 당시 국가적 경제 위기 사태로 오랜 기간 유휴공간에 머물러 있었습니다. 4층의 건물을 토탈미술관의 분관으로 다시 꾸리면서 고삼 호수의 아름다운 전경을 바라보는 객실들은 전시장으로 탈바꿈하였습니다.
온라인 환경에서는 이동과 관람에 편의를 더하기 위해 네 개의 층을 분리하였고 다양한 메타버스 전시를 실험하기 위한 플랫폼으로 운영됩니다.

메타 토탈-장흥은 물리적 제약을 넘어서 장애예술 발표 기회를 확대하고, 장애예술을 성찰하는 공간으로 특화하여 운영됩니다. 첫 전시에는 작가 4인의 개인전이 동시에 개최되며, 정민우, 최병철, 픽셀 김 그리고 홍영훈이 참여합니다.
메타 토탈-장흥은 오래된 사진과 낡은 도면으로만 남은 토탈미술관 장흥의 모습을 디지털로 복원하였습니다. 건축가 문신규와의 인터뷰를 통해 그의 기억을 더듬으며 야외조각공원을 포함해 6,000평의 규모를 이루었던 미술관의 다채로운 건축물과 구조물을 재현하였습니다.

토탈미술관은 2020년부터 제페토, 스페이셜, 마인크래프트와 같은 메타버스 플랫폼에서 다양한 예술 활동을 하면서 여러 플랫폼의 특징을 살펴보고, 메타버스 안에서의 예술 활동의 가능성과 한계에 대한 연구 활동을 지속해 오고 있습니다.

프로젝트들 중 Between Particles and Waves(BPAW)는 2021년 얀 보만, 브래드 다우니, 양자주 작가의 공동기획으로 진행된 프로젝트로써, 토탈미술관은 시즌1의 협력기관으로 참여한 것이 계기가 되어 이후 시즌2(2022년), 시즌3(2023년)를 함께 해 오고 있습니다. BPAW는 매 시즌 이전 프로젝트에서의 아쉬움을 보강하면서 마인크래프트 공간 안에 기존의 작품을 재해석한 공공미술 작품을 전시하기도 하고, 회화, 설치, 미디어아트와 같은 다양한 장르의 현대미술 작품을 입체적으로 재구성 하였습니다.

2023년 시즌3를 준비하면서 마련한 첫번째 라운드테이블에서는 토탈미술관의 메타버스 프로젝트와 BPAW의 사례연구를 중심으로 메타버스 안에서 이루어지는 예술활동들을 살펴보고, 이러한 활동들에서 제기되는 문제점 및 새로운 예술활동으로의 가능성을 함께 논의해보고자 합니다.

The Show Must Go On x IAP

Beyond the exhibition space, “The show must go on”

(TSMGO) started in July 2012 with Korean artists. It is planned as a reaction of international biennale fever. There are so many biennales than we imagine, but only a few artists from Korea are invited. Until now, only the occasional group exhibitions of Korean Contemporary Art offered a chance for Korean artists to present themselves abroad. These national group exhibitions provide a helpful first step for the artists, as in the case of Chinese and Japanese artists. Such group exhibitions, however, seldom manage to show the full depth of an artist’s work. It is therefore difficult to present an artist where his presence is limited to one or two pieces of work. Even though there are many interesting themes in biennale from great curators, most artists have no chance to think about it or be involved in this interesting discourse. It is not many different from curators. So, we would like to make our own field.

The initial plan of this project also focused on promoting Korean contemporary artists abroad in 2012. We made a strategy to organize talks and workshops instead of exhibitions. It is because artists’ ‘works’(and often not the artists themselves)are invited to many international exhibitions. But artists hardly have a chance to go abroad and talk about what they are thinking with foreign audience. For those reasons, we organized artists’ talk program in London, Kota Kinabalu, Seoul in 2012, and the project called ‘traveling portfolio suitcase’.

TSMGO2020 x IAP (Incheon Art Platform)
The project, TSMGO2020 was initiated in collaboration with the Incheon Art Platform. Due to COVID19, cultural and artistic institutions were closed, and even borders were closed. Large biennales were postponed or canceled. It was time to ask if the format of past international exchange was still valid or not. The 14 resident artists of the Incheon Art Platform included their works into the separate portfolio suitcases with the artists’ notes. After the overseas curators receive the suitcases, they will keep the suitcases for a month and will review the work while writing comments about art works and taking photos of how each portfolio suitcase gets displayed in the unique places. 1 month later, the curators will resend the portfolio bags to Korea with their comments and display photos enclosed.
