《uni form: Broken Twill in Berlin》

2025년 8월 서울 토탈미술관에서 개최된 《uni form: Broken Twill》은 패션과 현대예술의 경계를 넘나들며 ‘유니폼’이라는 사회적 구조를 재해석한 전시였다. 이 전시는 패션 디자이너이자 현대미술 작가인 최철용(Chul Yong CHOI)의 회화 시리즈를 중심으로 구성되었지만, 기획자, 디자이너, 연구자, 미디어 전문가로 구성된 코어그룹(Core Group)이 함께 참여하며 개인전의 형식을 넘어서는 새로운 전시 기획 모델을 제안했다.

또한 주제의 깊이 있는 탐구를 위해 최철용의 회화 외에도 다양한 초청작품이 함께 전시되었다. 이는 한명의 작가를 중심으로 하되, 그 주제를 다각도로 확장하고 해석하는 협업적 담론 구조를 형성했다는 점에서 신선하고 실험적인 전시로 평가받았다.

이러한 특징들은 《uni form》이 단발성 개인전이 아니라, 동시대 담론을 지속적으로 확장해 나가는 플랫폼적 구조를 지니고 있음을 보여준다. ‘유니폼’이라는 주제를 통해 집단과 개인, 규율과 자유, 제도와 감정 사이의 관계를 탐구한 이 전시는, 결과적으로 예술을 통해 ‘사회적 구조를 사유하는 실험적 장(場)’을 제안했다.

이번 베를린 에디션은 이러한 서울 전시의 철학과 구조를 계승하면서, 물리적 전시의 확장을 넘어 디지털 트랜스포메이션(Digital Transformation)을 본격적으로 시도한 버전이다. 토탈미술관에서 진행되었던 전시의 전 과정—기획, 설치, 기록, 대화, 이미지, 텍스트—을 데이터셋(dataset)으로 구축, 공유하고, 이를 바탕으로 AI 창작 실험과 제너러티브 리컴포지션(generative recomposition)을 진행했다.

즉, 《uni form: Broken Twill》의 베를린 에디션은 서울 전시의 내용을 단순히 재현하는 것이 아니라, 그 과정 자체를 데이터 기반 창작의 원천으로 재구성한 실험적 전시이다. 이러한 시도는 전시를 ‘결과’가 아닌 ‘과정의 집적체이자 재생 가능한 구조’로 바라보며, 예술과 기술, 인간과 인공지능이 함께 동시대의 시각적 언어를 다시 짜는 장(場)을 만들어낸다.

무엇보다 ‘유니폼’ 프로젝트는 베를린 전시를 기점으로 다른 도시로의 확장과 다양한 예술가 및 연구자와의 협업을 가능하게 하는 국제적 순환 플랫폼(global curatorial platform)으로 발전하고 있다. 이는 전시가 단일한 결과물로 머무는 것이 아니라, AI, 데이터, 패션, 예술, 사회학적 담론이 교차하는 살아 있는 구조로서 지속적으로 진화해 나간다는 점에서 큰 의의를 지닌다.

The exhibition “uni form: Broken Twill,” (uni form) held at Total Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul in August 2025, crossed the boundaries of fashion, art, and technology to reinterpret the social structure of the ‘uniform.’ Although the exhibition was centered on the painting series of fashion designer and contemporary artist Chul Yong CHOI, it also involved a Core Group consisting of curators, designers, researchers, and media specialists, proposing a new curatorial model that transcends the typical format of a solo exhibition.

“uni form” functioned not merely as a presentation of an individual artist’s visual language but as a collaborative platform that deepened the study of the uniform concept within social, cultural, and technological contexts. Experts from various disciplines participated in every stage of the project — from research, philosophy, and design to spatial composition and data collection —
offering a new possibility of a collective research-based exhibition that borrows the form of a solo show.

To further explore the theme, the exhibition also included a number of invited works. Centered around a single artist, it constructed a multilayered structure of discourse that expanded and reinterpreted the subject from various perspectives, earning recognition for its freshness and experimental approach.

These characteristics demonstrate that “uni form” is not a one-time exhibition but a platform-like structure that continues to expand contemporary discourse. By exploring the relationship between collectivity and individuality, discipline and freedom, institution and emotion through the lens of the uniform, the exhibition proposed an experimental field for reflecting on social structures through art.

The Berlin edition inherits this philosophy and structure from the Seoul exhibition, taking a step further to pursue a full-fledged digital transformation. Every element of the Total Museum exhibition —exhibition planning, installation, documentation, conversations, images, and texts —
was transformed into a dataset and used as the foundation for AI-based creative experiments and generative recompositions.

Thus, “uni form: Broken Twill – Berlin Edition” does not merely replicate the Seoul exhibition
but reconstructs its process as a creative source rooted in data. This approach redefines the exhibition as not a finished result but as an accumulative and regenerative process, creating a space where art, technology, humans, and artificial intelligence weave together new visual languages of our time.

Above all, the “uni form” project, beginning with its Berlin presentation, is envisioned as an evolving global curatorial platform, enabling further expansion to other cities and collaborations among artists, researchers, and institutions worldwide. Rather than being confined to a single outcome, the exhibition continues to evolve as a living structure in which AI, data, fashion, art, and social discourse dynamically intersect.

《난지도·메타-복스 40: 녹아내린 모든 견고함》은 토탈미술관 개관 50주년을 앞두고 마련되었으며, 미술 제도의 형성기였던 1980년대와 빠르게 변화하는 오늘의 시점을 겹쳐 읽기를 시도한다. 이를 위해 동시대 기획자와 연구자가 협업하여 1980년대 한국 현대미술의 실험적 흐름을 이끌었던 난지도와 메타-복스 그룹의 활동을 다시 조명하고, 당시 작가들의 선언과 실천, 그리고 그 이후의 지속된 작업을 통해 예술이 제도와 현실 사이에서 어떻게 새로운 언어를 만들어왔는지를 탐구한다. ‘견고함이 녹아내린 자리’에서 새롭게 형성되는 예술의 가능성을 주목하며, 미술관 이후의 미술관을 모색하기 위한 논의의 장이 펼쳐지기를 기대한다.

Nanjido·Meta-Vox 40: All that is solid melts into air is organized in anticipation of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Total Museum of Contemporary Art, attempting to overlay readings of the 1980s—a formative period for the art institution—with the rapidly changing present. To this end, contemporary curators and researchers collaborate to reexamine the activities of the Nanjido and Meta-Vox groups, which led the experimental currents of Korean contemporary art in the 1980s. Through the declarations and practices of artists at that time, and their subsequent ongoing work, it explores how art has forged new languages between the institution and reality. Focusing on the possibilities of art newly emerging from ‘where solidity has melted away,’ we anticipate the unfolding of a forum for discussion to explore the museum beyond the museum.

토탈미술관은 1976년 개관한 한국 최초의 사립 현대미술관으로, 예술의 다양한 장르를 수용하고 현대미술의 실험적 도전을 꾸준히 지원해 왔습니다. 이러한 전통과 정신을 바탕으로, 미술관의 지속 가능한 미래를 함께 만들어가고자 후원전 《Total Support 2025》를 오는 10월 15일부터 23일까지 개최합니다.

2025년, 토탈미술관은 《uni form: Broken Twill》로 한 해의 문을 열었습니다. 코어 그룹과 초대 작품을 통해 개인전의 새로운 형식을 실험한 이 전시는 다가오는 11월에는 독일로 이어져 국제 교류의 장을 확장할 예정입니다. 한국 현대미술을 해외와 연결하고 문화예술의 폭넓은 소통을 실현하려는 노력은 지난 4월 주캐나다 한국문화원에서 개최된 《The Show Must Go On: Canada》 전시로부터 그 흐름을 이어왔습니다. 한편 국내에서는 7월부터 천안과 파주에서 소장품 전시를 선보이고 있으며, 경상남도 거제시에서 픽셀 킴과 정민수의 개인전을 개최하며 지역 사회 속 현대미술의 접근성을 확대해 왔습니다.

토탈미술관의 교육 프로그램 또한 꾸준히 이어지고 있습니다. 30여년 동안 지속되어온 대표 프로그램 〈토탈아카데미〉는 현대미술뿐 아니라 건축, 음악, 무용 등 다양한 장르를 아우르며 문화예술의 폭넓은 접점을 확장해왔습니다. 그 경험을 바탕으로 2024년에 새롭게 출범한 〈토탈세미나〉는 지난 1년간 동시대 작가들의 작업을 깊이 탐구하며 새로운 담론을 열어가고 있고, 매주 월요일 열리는 〈월요살롱〉은 400회를 돌파하며 다양한 분야 전문가들과 예술 담론을 이어가고 있습니다. 더불어 일요독서모임 〈일(ㄱ)자회〉는 책을 매개로 예술적 교감을 나누는 공동체로 자리 잡았으며, 올해 새롭게 시작된 〈AT&D SCHOOL〉은 ‘학교’라는 형식 안에서 미디어아트를 향한 전문적이고도 창의적인 탐구를 열어가고 있습니다.

아울러, 미술관의 사회적 책임에 대한 고민 속에서 시작된 〈바틱 스토리〉는 올해도 홍익대학교 섬유미술패션디자인과와 협력하여 진행되고 있습니다. 한국의 학생들과 인도네시아 바틱 장인들이 함께하는 이 프로젝트는 예술의 지속 가능성과 사회적 가치를 실천하는 모범적인 사례로 자리매김하고 있습니다.

Total Museum of Contemporary Art, which opened in 1976 as Korea’s first private contemporary art museum, has consistently embraced diverse art genres and supported experimental challenges in contemporary art. Building on this tradition and spirit, we are hosting the fundraising exhibition 《Total Support 2025》 from October 15 to 23 to collaboratively build a sustainable future for the museum.

In 2025, the Total Museum opened the year with the exhibition 《uni form: Broken Twill》. This exhibition, which experimented with new formats for solo shows through core group and invited works, is set to expand its international reach by traveling to Germany this November. This effort to connect Korean contemporary art with the world and realize broad communication in culture and arts follows the momentum from 《The Show Must Go On: Canada》 held at the Korean Cultural Centre in Canada this past April. Domestically, we have been showcasing collection exhibitions in Cheonan and Paju since July, and have expanded the accessibility of contemporary art within local communities by holding solo exhibitions for Pixel Kim and Minsoo Jeong in Geoje-si, Gyeongsangnam-do.

The Total Museum of Art’s educational programs are also continuing apace. The flagship program, 〈Total Academy〉, which has been running for over 30 years, embraces various genres including not only contemporary art but also architecture, music, and dance, expanding the broad contact points of culture and art. Based on this experience, the newly launched 〈Total Seminar〉 in 2024 has been deeply exploring the works of contemporary artists and opening new discourses over the past year. Furthermore, the weekly 〈Monday Salon〉 has surpassed its 400th session, continuing artistic discussions with experts from diverse fields. In addition, the Sunday book club 〈Sunday Book Club〉 has established itself as a community that shares artistic communion through books, and the newly launched 〈AT&D SCHOOL〉 this year is pioneering professional and creative explorations of media art within the format of a ‘school.’

Moreover, 〈Batik Story〉, which began out of a concern for the museum’s social responsibility, is being held this year in collaboration with the Department of Fiber Art and Fashion Design at Hongik University. This project, bringing together students from Korea and Batik artisans from Indonesia, serves as an exemplary case for practicing the sustainability and social value of art.

작년에 진행된 <Between Particles and Waves 1>은 전 세계 도시의 공공장소에서 국제 예술가 그룹을 재결합하는 최초의 전시회를 열었다. 2,800만X2,800 만X256 블록의 가상 공간에 제작된 작품은 유명 유튜버 ‘SURRY’가 건설하는 과정을 전시했다.

토탈미술관은 2022년도에 공공미술 한국 작가 작품을 추가하여 <Between Particles and Waves> 시즌 2를 맞이한다. 마인크래프트 세계 안에서는 학교, 전시장, 회사를 만들고 타인과 교류하며, 그 안에서 ‘나’의 정체성을 투영한 아바타와 상호작용한다. 가상공간에서 일상생활이 가능함에 따라 사적 공간보다 공공 공간에 더 가까워지고 공공 공간으로서 메타버스에 대한 다양한 실험활동을 시도한다. 또한 메타버스 속에서 게임을 액세스하는 모든 사람이 환경에 몰입하고 현장에서 작품을 경험할 수 있도록 실현한다.

2022년에는 《사실, 망자는 죽지 않았다》 전시에 이어서 《비커밍의 기술》을 기획하였으며, 신자유주의와 신식민주의의 지배적인 권력 구조와 관계를 조명하고, (비)물질적 자연에 속한 여러 가지 종류의 기관, 제도, 네트워크, 건축, 유통망 등을 탐구하고자 한다. 이어서 국제 사회와 경제를 지탱하고 관리하는 다양한 종류의 인프라(소셜 미디어, 스마트 기술, 기계 시스템 등)에 초점을 맞추고, 기관과 제도가 어떤 방식으로 사회에 영향을 주고 있는지에 대한 상황을 다룬다. 또한 이번 전시에서는 성차별주의, 인종차별주의, 비규범적인 신체나 인간 이상의 신체를 향한 병리적 차별 및 폭력과 복잡하게 얽힌 것을 예술로서 질문을 던지고자 한다.

The Korean iteration of Actually, The Dead Are Not Dead, originally curated by Hans D. Christ and Iris Dressler for the third edition of Bergen Assembly, was held at Total Museum of Art in 2021. Bringing together works of over 40 artists and collectives, the exhibition sought to explore ways to challenge and question existing binaries of life and death, human and non-human, subject and object, abled and disabled bodies, past and future.

[ Beyond View ]

현실과 가상을 잇는 ‘Beyond view’는 사진 작품의 감상부터 그 이후의 과정을들 새로운 방식으로 경험하게 합니다.
작품을 매개로 전문가와 비전문가가 앞으로 변모하는 사진 매체를 함께 경험하며 다양한 주제로 소통 할 수 있습니다.
우리가 알고 있던 기존의 사진, 가지고 있는 시야를 넘어서 새로운 사진의 의미를 찾고 더 넓을 시야를 가져보게 합니다.
